What if the conversation around climate change and how to stop it was all wrong? What if carbon emissions, fracking, oil pipelines, and Hummers weren’t the main driving contributors to climate change, and instead it was as simple as the few ounces of meat on your plate? Well, contrary to mainstream hype, it turns out scientists at the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change conclude that animal agriculture is by far the leading cause of green house gas emissions, water consumption, deforestation, wildlife destruction and ocean dead zones. So why is animal agriculture and diet not at the forefront of every environmental justice organizations agenda? Cowspiracy finds that out.
In June of 2014 Kip and Keegan released their first feature length film together called Cowspiracy. Cowspiracy lays out why animal agriculture is the culprit behind most environmental issues and why the largest environmental organization are not talking about it or encouraging their members to adopt a more sustainable, plant-based diet.
Recently Cowspiracy was released on Netflix worldwide with the help of the executive producer of the film, Leonardo DiCaprio, who fully supports the mission and message Kip and Keegan are putting out into the world. In this conversation I ask the filmmakers how they became environmentalists and when veganism became the focus of their work. We also discuss the difference, sustainability wise, between factory farming and free range livestock agriculture, the downsides of the locavore movement, “Ag-Gag Laws”, and what would happen if the world went vegan overnight.
