Animal agriculture is the number one contributor of green house gas emissions, water use, deforestation, and wild life destruction on our planet. Animal agriculture does not only make food, it also produces clothes from the 6.4 million tonnes of skins and hides produced to make shoes, jackets, belts and handbags. Joshua Katcher is designing the future of fashion by creating high quality and high fashion mens clothing from sustainable, ethical, and long lasting material.
In 2008 Joshua started his website and blog called The Discerning Brute where he publishes current events articles on fashion, fitness, masculinity, food and sustainability. The success of his blog led Joshua to start his fashion company called Brave GentleMan comprised of high fashion fancy and business casual menswear.
In 2014 Joshua became an adjunct professor of fashion at Parson The New School in NYC where he teaches about the ethics and environmental impact of the fashion industry. Joshua recently opened up a temporary pop up shop in Brooklyn, NY, and PETA awarded him the most influential fashion designer of 2015.
In this conversation Joshua and I discuss the ethical and environmental impact of the fashion industry, the invention of “future-leather and wool”, Crossfit, masculinity and tattoos.
